When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?

Young Alumni Sunday Night Dinner at the Santa Monica Shelter
Santa Monica, CA
The Samoshel Shelter is an emergency shelter for over 100 men and women in Santa Monica. NDCLA Young Alumni host dinner at the Shelter every third Sunday of the month. Volunteers are needed to help cook between 3 and 5pm. (Dinner is served at 4:30, and the residents are responsible for cleaning up.) We also need dinner hosts from time to time, which involves planning and shopping for the meal. If you’re interested in volunteering or hosting, email Maria Joyce at maria.k.joyce@gmail.com.
The Center is located at 505 W. Olympic Blvd on the North side of the 10 freeway in Santa Monica. Parking is very limited, but there are meters around the corner.
Good Shepherd Shelter Partnership
Good Shepherd Shelter, operated by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd since 1904, is a private emergency shelter for battered women and children located near Arlington & Venice Boulevards. Sister Anne always needs lots of help throughout December to manage donations, distribution of gifts and decorating around the Shelter. She also has "spring cleaning" projects from time to time. Dates for 2009 to be determined. Sister Anne also sells items from third world locations where her Order works. These lovely gifts give women and children training and jobs, and most importantly, the ability to lift themselves out of poverty. See www.handcraftingjustice.org for shopping ideas. Email us at ndcla@yahoo.com if you’re interested in helping out at one of Sister Anne’s Sunday sales.
Cross-Cultural Leadership Intern Program (CCLIP)
The CCLIP-LA program began in the summer of 2008 and is an initiative that provides Notre Dame students with exposure to communities in need in the greater Los Angeles area. Students work with organizations in an eight-week learning experience to develop their leadership skills. The program offers three academic course credits. The internship sites are at La Opinion, Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and at the Los Angeles Urban League.
Summer of 2008
The three interns who participated were Ilse Terrazas, Aimee Brewster, and Jaime Luna. Video clips and their final papers can be found here http://latinostudies.nd.edu/students/cclip.php.
Ilse will start a job with Starbucks in Seattle, Washington this summer. Aimee will begin a graduate program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and Jaime will work with Teach for America in Houston, Texas. We wish them luck.
Summer of 2009
CCLIP-LA will take place between June 7 and August 1. The three interns are Patrick Montalvo, Michelle Saucedo, and Albert Toscano.
Patrick Montalvo
Internship Site: La Opinion
Patrick is originally from San Antonio, Texas. He is working toward a double major in English and Film/Television. He looks forward to being in Los Angeles and working for La Opinión.
Michelle Saucedo
Internship Site: MALDEF
Michelle is a rising senior, originally from Phoenix, Arizona. She is majoring in sociology and interested in pursuing a law career. Michelle would like to be a resource for families who find themselves underrepresented in legal situations.
Albert Toscano
Internship Site: Los Angeles Urban League
Albert is a rising sophomore originally from Pico Rivera, California. He credits his involvement in sports with developing his discipline to pursue a degree so far away from home. Albert is majoring in Finance. He is interested in sports management and his dream job would be with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Painted Turtle
Lake Hughes Camp for Kids with Long-term Illnesses
www.thepaintedturtle.org
Volunteers are needed for 2 programs of the Paramount Education Partnership. The first is a Homework Help Program for grades 1-12 at a drop-in tutoring center in Paramount. Homework help is needed in math, English & science, M-TH from 3:30 - 7:00pm. Volunteers are welcome at any time because there are always many more kids than tutors available. Let us know what fits with your schedule.
The second program is a Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Program which is an effort in conjunction with Long Beach State to attract more young, disadvantaged students into engineering professions. You would work with the supervising teachers of the High School Future Engineer's Club to be a mentor in a science, math and engineering field depending on your background. Engineers' Club meets on weekday afternoons at 3:00pm. Site visits to Long Beach State occur on 5 Saturdays throughout the school year. Volunteers are welcome to assist teachers at any of these times.
MESA would also love to take students on site visits to engineering and science firms and agencies, so if you think your company would be a good candidate and you would like to arrange a visit, let us know.
The Painted Turtle seeks to reach beyond illness, to inspire children with life-threatening diseases to become their greater selves. It is their mission to provide a year-round, life-changing environment for these children and their families - one that allows children to participate in an authentic camp experience by supporting their medical needs and offers their families care, education and respite.
The Painted Turtle offers 5-7 day volunteer opportunities in the summer and 3 day family weekends in the summer. Roles include being a counselor/family pal during a session to welcome campers and their families so that they enjoy time away from home. Be ready to have fun and be creative, singing, dancing, boating, fishing, playing basketball, swimming, arts, crafts, woodshop and more. You will have the time of your life.
For family weekends you will arrive at camp on a Friday between 2:00 - 2:30pm for a camp tour and orientation. You will see the family off and finish the weekend on that Sunday around 3:00pm. In 2009, volunteers can sign up for any available weekend and get familiar with the camp. (Painted Turtle is always in need of volunteers.)
This is a wonderful organization founded by Paul Newman, and our own NDCLA Board member Alexis Madrid works for the camp. Join us for 48 incredible hours of hard work, fun and service. To learn more about the camp and fill out an on-line application please visit: http://www.thepaintedturtle.org
