2010 Hesburgh Lecture held at USC Lusk Center
On Thursday June 17, 2010, the Black Alumni of Notre Dame ("BAND"), in conjunction with the Notre Dame Club of Los Angeles, hosted the Hesburgh Lecture Series’ first annual Dialogue on Diversity. This lecture has been on a national tour with previous stops in Washington DC, Baltimore, Detroit, Atlanta and Chicago. The topic of the lecture was Post Racial America. The presenters were Dr. Don Pope-Davis and Dr. Darren Davis. Dr. Don Pope-Davis’ studies are in the in the areas of multicultural psychology, counseling and education as well as being a university Vice President and Associate Provost. Dr. Darren Davis is a professor of Political Science whose areas of expertise are political psychology, public opinion, political behavior, voting behavior, research methods and racial politics.
The event was hosted on the campus of USC, specifically by the Ross Minority Program in Real Estate, an affiliated program of the USC LUSK Center. Although the event coincided with game seven of the NBA finals, it was well attended. The professors spoke to 20 alumni, current students and parents and took advantage of the comfortable family setting to address current issues effecting faculty and students on campus. While this was a deviation from their formal presentation, attendees were thankful to be able to participate in a real forum setting.
BAND would like to thank Dr. Pope-Davis and Dr. Davis for their tireless efforts. In addition, BAND is truly thankful for the efforts of the Notre Club of Los Angeles, specifically those of Rob Menz, Carolyn Carney and Hilda McGonigle. The event was a huge success! Well, up until the point where we were forced to drop our esteemed professors off on the other side of a police barricade because of the "excessive celebration" after the Lakers won the title. Only in Los Angeles.
Young Alumni Sunday Night Dinner at the Santa Monica Shelter
Santa Monica, CA
The Samoshel Shelter is an emergency shelter for over 100 men and women in Santa Monica. NDCLA Young Alumni host dinner at the Shelter every third Sunday of the month. Volunteers are needed to help cook between 3 and 5pm. (Dinner is served at 4:30, and the residents are responsible for cleaning up.) We also need dinner hosts from time to time, which involves planning and shopping for the meal. If you’re interested in volunteering or hosting, email Maria Joyce at maria.k.joyce@gmail.com.
The Center is located at 505 W. Olympic Blvd on the North side of the 10 freeway in Santa Monica. Parking is very limited, but there are meters around the corner.
Good Shepherd Shelter Partnership
Good Shepherd Shelter, operated by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd since 1904, is a private emergency shelter for battered women and children located near Arlington & Venice Boulevards. Sister Anne always needs lots of help throughout December to manage donations, distribution of gifts and decorating around the Shelter. She also has "spring cleaning" projects from time to time. Dates for 2010 to be determined. Sister Anne also sells items from third world locations where her Order works. These lovely gifts give women and children training and jobs, and most importantly, the ability to lift themselves out of poverty. See www.handcraftingjustice.org for shopping ideas. Email us at ndcla@yahoo.com if you’re interested in helping out at one of Sister Anne’s Sunday sales.
Cross-Cultural Leadership Intern Program (CCLIP)
The CCLIP-LA program began in the summer of 2008 and is an initiative that provides Notre Dame students with exposure to communities in need in the greater Los Angeles area. Students work with organizations in an eight-week learning experience to develop their leadership skills. The program offers three academic course credits. The internship sites are at La Opinion, Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and at the Los Angeles Urban League.
