News Bulletin: Notre Dame's First African-American Valedictorian Katie Washington, valedictorian of Notre Dame’s 2010 graduating class is the University’s first African-American valedictorian. A biological sciences major from Gary, Ind., Washington earned a 4.0 grade point average and has been a member of the Dean’s List each semester. She also has a minor in Catholic Social Teaching and has conducted lung cancer research at the Cold Spring Harbor labs. During her time at Notre Dame, Washington performed genetic studies on mosquitoes in the University’s Eck Institute for Global Health and she directed the Voices of Faith Gospel Choir. 2009 Alumni Senate Awards Among many of the sessions during Alumni Senate Weekend an awards dinner was held to honor those clubs who work so hard to keep the Notre Dame family connected with events throughout the world and who contribute to the University scholarship fund. Our Club was honored with two awards, the Program of Excellence Award, and the Special Citation Award. The Alumni Association presents the Program of Excellence Award to a club judged to have an outstanding overall program. The Special Citation Award is presented to a club that has sponsored some remarkable program or event, which supports the mission of the Association while serving the needs and interests of the alumni and/or the local community. The determination of these awards is made by the Alumni Clubs Committee. Congratulations to all our members on helping the club to achieve these honors! 2008 Alumni Senate Awards NDCLA with Website Award NDCLA was awarded a plague for our website at this year's Alumni Senate. This is a wonderful achievement and kudos go to Envision for hosting the site and Chris Henstra for his dedication and work to make our site an award winning site. Moving forward, Envision will be releasing its control of the website to NDCLA once our club can set up a new hosting site Notre Dame Club of Los Angeles Wins AA Club of the Year for 2007 During Alumni Senate which was held in May 2008 on campus, the Alumni Association awarded the LA Club with its "Club of the Year Award" for AA-sized clubs. Chuck Lennon, President of the Alumni Association, presented the award to Club President, Kevin G. McBride, during the award's dinner. In accepting the award, President McBride stated that "the award represents the significant effort undertaken by the Board of Directors to improve the Club over the last several years. We have made efforts in community service, spirituality, scholarship funds and professional networking, to name a few. The Club is now larger and more diverse than ever in its activities, and we are very proud that the Alumni Association has recognized the Club in this regard."
