2011 "Bat For The Cure"

NDCLA Seniors took part in the Notre Dame Alumni Association's support for Ed Randall's "Bat For The Cure" campaign again this year in Lancaster. Special thanks to Ken Francis '67 for his help on July 23, 2011 at Clear Channel Stadium, the home of the Lancaster Jethawks. We set up at around 5:00 PM, then we handed out prostate cancer information to the fans who attended the game. Once again, we rafflled off a blue "Bat For The Cure" bat that was signed by the players of that night's game. Congratulations to the winner of the bat, Daniel Voyles

Senior Alumni Meet With Mother of Sorrows School Leaders

Senior Alumni have embarked on a program to assist Mother of Sorrows school in their quest for sustainability and met with the Principal, Jennifer Beltramo, a three degree alumna from Notre Dame and Ann Stacy, the Development Coordinator.

At this meeting we discussed ways that NDCLA, the Institute for Genetic Medicine (IGM) Art Gallery (Lynn Crandall serves as IGM AG Director), and Mother of Sorrows school can work together to bring about the school’s goal of sustainability at a time when the school is showing remarkable achievements in student performance; yet in a time where money to keep them thriving cannot be guaranteed.

Mother of Sorrows is currently sponsored by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul and receives funding from the Daughters of Charity Foundation. This cannot be relied upon as a long term funding source. Mother of Sorrows is located in South Central LA. 100% of the students come from families who cannot afford to send their children to Catholic school. All students need financial assistance. Four years ago, Mother of Sorrows students ranked in the 10th percentile in the nation for academic performance. They now rank in the 50th percentile and are instilled with a passion to give back to society when they graduate.

Paul Dubé, the Senior Alumni Coordinator, visited the school on June 8, 2011. One of the students who graduated the week before, Julissa, had already returned as a volunteer. Julissa, along with a current sixth grader, Camila, recently elected to the Student Council, took Paul on a guided tour of the school. Both of these students were congenial, knowledgeable of the school and served as fine representatives of the type of students Mother of Sorrows school now produces.

2010 "Bat For The Cure"

The Notre Dame Senior Alumni Association annually supports Ed Randall's "Bat For The Cure" campaign. Ed is a prostate cancer survivor and now uses the minor league baseball venue to spread the word for early detection of prostate cancer. At these events, literature is passed out explaining why a simple PSA test can mean the difference between life and death.

NDCLA was invited to man the table at this year's "Bat For The Cure" game which was held September 3, 2010 in Lancaster, CA for a game between the Lancaster Jethawks (affiliated with the Houston Astros) and the Rancho Cucamunga Quakes(affiliated with the Los Angeles Angels). Paul Dubé, our Senior Alumni coordinator and also a prostate cancer survivor, handed out flyers and encouraged people to sign up for the blue bat give-away.

Congratulations to Audreanna Brown for having the winning drawing and taking the bat home. The bat was signed by all of the uniformed members of the Lancaster Jethawks at that game.

The Notre Dame Senior Alumni is a sub group of the Notre Dame Alumni Association which comprises nearly 40% of the whole alumni body. However, the participation from Seniors is a mere fraction of that number.

There are many activities that are being discussed such as:
  • • Cancer Awareness Initiative
    •     o Cancer Education
    •     o Cancer Support Group

    •     o Support for testing and screening activities
